Overview of BEE Registration

The growing energy consumption in India has become a major concern for the government. Each year, millions of electrical products and appliances enter the Indian market to meet the increasing demand. Many of these products, especially from generic brands, tend to consume more power than recommended.

This is where BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) registration becomes crucial.

It requires manufacturers to produce energy-efficient products that meet the prescribed quality standards. Additionally, it mandates the placement of star labels and ratings on their products before they are launched in the market.

Products Covered by Mandatory BEE Registration

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, mandates that certain products must be registered and carry energy star ratings to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions. Below is the list of products that require mandatory BEE registration:

Similarly, for foreign OEMs, an Indian-based firm must be appointed as the authorized signatory for the same purpose.

Step-by-Step Process for Securing BEE Registration in India

The BEE Registration process involves three key steps: company/brand registration, product testing, and model registration. Here’s how you can apply:

Step 1: Company/Brand Registration

The first step is to register your company or brand with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).

  • Online Registration: Visit the BEE portal and fill out the required e-form. You will need to upload the relevant documents as per the guidelines.
  • Hard Copy Submission: For large companies, submit a hard copy of the documents to the regional BEE office. Smaller facilities are required to follow a similar submission process.

Step 2: Testing

Once your company is registered, BEE will provide login credentials for accessing the portal to complete the remaining registration steps.

  • Testing Requirements: The product must undergo testing at an accredited lab or ILAC MRA lab to ensure it meets the quality standards set by BEE.
  • Test Report: After testing, the lab will generate a report confirming whether the product meets the required norms. It is essential to submit this report within its validity period to continue the registration process.

Step 3: Model Registration

After receiving the test report, proceed with model registration on the BEE portal:

  • Upload Documents: Upload the necessary documents, including the lab report and a sample label for the product.
  • Fee Submission: Pay the registration fee and submit the payment receipt.
  • Hard Copy Submission: Submit the hard copies of the application, originals, and the payment receipt to the concerned BEE department.

Once the documents are verified, BEE will grant the registration.

BEE Registration Validity and Renewal

The BEE registration remains valid for three years from the date of issuance. Applicants can renew the registration within the specified timeline by submitting the required form and paying the renewal fee.
